Giving every child the best start in life should be front and centre of the policy agenda – both now and for any future government.

By chairing this independent cross-party commission together, we hope to set out an ambitious reform agenda that will deliver real change in early years policy.

– Sharon Hodgson MP and Edward Timpson CBE MP

This Early Years Commission is chaired by Sharon Hodgson MP and Edward Timpson MP. Working with partners across the early years sector, the Commission aims to develop a policy agenda which is built on the widely accepted evidence about the critical importance of a child’s early years.

The Commission is focused on building consensus around a set of policy proposals for national and local government in England – we will not undertake new primary research into the importance of early years policy itself, which we believe is already well established. We believe this independent, cross-party approach is the most effective way of ensuring that the early years becomes a government priority, and stays a priority, for longer than one election cycle.

The Commission is funded by Kindred2, and the secretariat is jointly run by the Centre for Social Justice and the Fabian Society.
